Spreadsheet Phase 3

This project is used in conjunction with a unit on careers with seventh and eighth graders. The students have to research a (several) career(s) and look at different aspects, including training/education, job description/working conditions, salary, and any other relevant information they find. They generate a recruiting brochure, and presentation on their career(s). Along with gathering the information, they look at the information from their careers and choose one based on the data they gathered, defending their choice with information from their research and data manipulation from this spreadsheet.

Along with the research portion of the project, I would run a living simulation, where students have to do weekly analysis of living based on the salaries of the careers they picked and also with only a high school diploma, figuring in housing, car, other living expenses, etc. based on where they would like to live as adults. This would allow the students to get experience with simple spreadsheet use, possibly even using and writing formulas.


The educational objectives of this project are



  1. to intoduce different careers to students at the time they are plannig their high school education

  2. to allow students to see the importance of education

  3. to give students experience publishing and presenting

  4. to give students experience using spreadsheets

  5. to allow students a "real-world" look at living and the needs they will have as adults

This project will give students a variety of experiences that use a range of computing skills and applications, as well as require students to make choices based on their experiences manipulationg data in the career spreadsheet and their living simulation.
