A Comparative Study of Learning in Lecture vs. Problem-Based Format by Elizabeth M. Lieux, Nutrition and Dietetics
from ABOUT TEACHING -- #50A Newsletter of the Center for Teaching EffectivenessSpring 1996.
This article is very intersting in that it is a case study about applying PBL to a class. The instructor did not apply the PBL to study it's effectiveness, however, but to change from lecture and attempt to improve her instruction methods. The results from student surveys at the end of the course support the theories about the strengths of PBL, including improved communication and personal responsibility. These skills are essential to academic success, and the data from the students that went through the re-formatted course help to reinforce the success of PBL coursework.
